My European Adventure {2}

Hello all my friends out there. I am sitting on a train again and thought I would continue the telling of my journey where I left off in my last post. Currently things are going well - I am so happy and cannot even begin to think about how much more I will change and learn in the next few weeks . . . I am not sure I will be able to stop traveling in August {i am planning my next trip already}

Before I talk too much about my thoughts I am going to tell you a little bit about the last few weeks. Starting with a lengthy telling of my time in Italy {i will save Greece and Switzerland for my next post...and now i am in Spain so i have lots to tell}.
The Italia part of the trip started off terribly but quickly turned around ... i am looking back and laughing now at all the experiences - but at the time i was beginning to think that nothing could go right {don't laugh at how dumb we sound}

{PART FOUR - ITALY - FIRENZE, PISA, ROME, ANCONA}

On June 21st we left Salzburg Austria to go to Firenze {florence} Italy. The train ride was gorgeous and I again kept my gaze out the window the entire time. Upon our arrival in Florence we were aimlessly wandering around the city waiting to hear back from a couchsurfing host with our 25 lb packs on in 90 F weather. After an entire afternoon with no word from couchsurfer persons we were tired and didn't want to move any more so we caved and booked the cheapest hostel we could find for the night. Sadly, we were too uncomfortable to realize the beautiful city surrounding us at the time - all we could think about was a shower and sitting down. Upon arrival to our hostel we quickly realized why it was so cheap... {about 12 Euro a night} the guys that ran the hostel were very disorganized and annoying {one of them has the nickname - nasty weird dread guy} We had to wait for him to set up a bed in the room to make room for both of us - which was stupid ... but the location was perfect and he was quick to leave us to ourselves. He even made sure to let the female guests deal with the baby bird that had flown into our room - nast weird dread guy was definitely a lazy guy.
After getting settled in and cleaned up we went out to grab our first full meal of the day {it was after 10 pm} and went to a small bar where one dollar was equal to one euro! We didn't stay at the bar long, because it quickly filled up with young teenagers and we were too tired for that kind of atmosphere. I am not used to being out with 16 year olds quite yet.
On the following day we talked over breakfast with a few people who were staying at the same hostel and made plans to explore te city with Matt {from Toronto, Canada} who was traveling by himself. {we also decided to couchsurf that night because we finally had an offer from someone just outside Florence}. With Matt we hiked up a hill just on the edge of the city to the piazza di michaelangelo. The hot climb was well worth the view - we could see everything in the city. The red clay roofs looked beautiful from our perspective and i got a little emotional realizing the centuries of history behind the city and the fact that i was looking over a place i had always dreamed of visiting. We wandered around the city and went into a small sculpture gallery and visited inside the duomo. The church was so much more beautiful in person than in photographs, all of the details were much more colorful than i ever imagined. Inside the church was lovely, the decoration more simple than the exterior decor but it was beautiful nonetheless.

{our first night being homeless}

After a wonderful day exploring, we returned to the hostel to grab our things and make our way to the train station so we could meet our couchsurfing host for the evening and then get back to the city for dinner with a friend from KSU. We ran into some complications on our way to meet up with our host, first our train was an hour late, then we missed our stop because the sign for the stop was covered in graffiti... we hopped off as soon as possible and weighed our options because we had no way to let our host know we would be 2 hrs later than expected and we doubted that they would wait that long for us. At 9 pm we made a decison to return to the city and email our {almost} host about the situation {which is going down in history as the train fiasco}. We wanted to go to dinner with Jillian as planned, and so we just made up our minds to book a hostel for the night. We went to dinner at a pizzaria - had great food and enjoyed visiting with Jillian before we would walk to our hostel.

Around midnight we left Jillian's apartment and began following the walking directions to our hostel {approx. travel time: 45 min} the walk was miserable, painful, and scary since we had no clue where we were. We made it to our destination tired & cold... there we found a dark small building with a gate and a sign saying "camping and hostel". We thought that we might have accidently booked a campsite - and it appeared there was no one around to ask. We tried to ring the bell {for probably 20 mins} the small building did not look like a hostel at all, but we had hope. We looked past the sign and saw a long winding road through the dark forest. We agreed not to venture into the woods because it seemed like the perfect horror film set up and we were too tired to go off the path. With that, we had little option other than to return to the city and hope to find a place to sleep. {p.s. Somewhere in this journey i also discovered that one of my running shoes had fallen off my backpack so i was sad about that too}
We arrived at our final stop for the night around 3:30 am - which ended up being the lawn of the train station. At this point Jen couldn't stay awake any longer and so we sat outside on the lawn {where other backpackers were already sleeping} - I kept watch until sunrise while jen napped for a few hours. I watched the shifting light across a small church across the road until there was {normal} activity on the streets. In the early early morning we returned to the street where we stayed two nights before and stood outside to use the internet... we really wanted to find somewhere to sleep, and wanted to know what in the world we had booked the night before. As soon as we reviewed our booking for the hostel we noticed a small {yet very important} piece of information - "the hostel is located in the middle of a park, just a short walk from the main street" - looks like we should have dared to go into the dark woods the night before!
We took the next bus back to the location we had stood the night before and immediately began laughing about the situation from our last visit. The walk to the hostel was beautiful in the morning sun, and no longer a scary road. At the end of the road stood the hostel, an awesome old italian building with wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. Although unable to check in at such an early hour, we were offered breakfast and a shower - while we waited we laid our blankets in the shade outside and slept for 6 hours!
Because of our exhausting adventure the night before, we chilled out at the hostel for the afternoon and planned our trip to greece the following week and walked to the grocery store.for dinner and wine {1€}. Later that evening we headed back to the city center to have a night out. On our way to the bus stop i realized that my water bottle had leaked in my bag and had gotten my eurailpass wet {a piece of paper worth $1200} i began waving the pass trying to dry it while we waited for the bus to arrive. As soon as we boarded the bus and began to drive off i noticed that i had left my railpass sitting at the bus stop! I was so worried i thought i might be sick. . .We had to stay on the bus until it looped back to the stop which took 10 minutes or so - but it seemed like a year. I jumped off the bus and sprinted to the spot where i had left it and luckily i found it sitting there waiting for me! I am so thankful i found it because i would have had to go home early otherwise... {i now keep my pass in a plastic bag in a pouch tied around my waist … so hopefully no more incidents like that occur}
Needless to say, i was too stressed to continue on with our plans to stay out late, so we returned to our hostel and drank wine and ate pizza on the large wrap around porch. We mingled with other people who were also staying at the hostel and had a good time exchanging travel stories. We laughed alot that night and made some new FFFs {in case you don't know, that stands for Facebook Friends Forever}

On June 24 we took a day trip to Pisa where we took lots of silly picture with the leaning tower and enjoyed the beautiful sights of the city. We did a little bit of window shopping and sat down for a nice meal at an italian restaurant before going back to Florence. It was a holiday in Florence and that night we went with our new friend Matt to the riverside with a blanket, three glasses, and a bottle of wine to watch a fireworks show. This show was amazing - lasting an entire hour! The three of us smiled and laughed like little kids the entire time. I have never seen a fireworks show like this one... it was crazy good! After the fireworks ended we were told to turn our gaze towards the water, where hundreds of paper lanterns were being released into the night air over the river. It was beautiful to watch as the lantern flames reflected a warm light across the city skyline. I got a tad emotional because that day seemed perfect compared to the ones before - everything worked out and we were happy. In my notes that day i wrote "best day ever"! What a great end to our time in Florence.

After Florence we traveled to Rome where we would stay for two nights. We booked a hostel a little ways outside of the city but it was adorable. We had our own tiny two bed wood cabin with nothing more than beds and a small cabinet in it. The resort/campsite reminded us of summer camp with a walk to the showers, a small store, restaurant, and pool all in one place. We spent the first evening relaxing by the pool enjoying the scenery. We ate dinner at the resorts restaurant and then sat outside with a bottle of wine for dessert. We ended up having a dance party all by ourselves on the balcony just above other guests. We aren't sure if anyone noticed our extensive knowledge of dance moves and amazing taste in music, but we were definitely enjoying our dance night! Although we were dancing maniacs, we managed to take a few breaks to call our friends back home and also have intense conversations about life - there were tears and laughter. We retired {at an unknown time} to our cabin to rest for our day in the city being tourists.
On July 26 we started our sightseeing at the Colliseum and the ruins of the Roman Forum. I enjoyed being there more than i thought i would. I was moved by the grandeur of the colliseum and couldn't help imagining gladiators fighting and a time when only men were allowed inside. I was glad we decided to pay to see this piece of history {we are very picky about what we pay to see}! … after our time at the colliseum we wandered to the Trevi Fountain, where i wanted nothing more than to jump in the water.. it was lovely but it was a hot hot day in Rome. To escape from the heat we went into the Pantheon and adored the gorgeous marbel and the architectural beauty. Apparently you cannot sit down inside, because we tried and were told to stand... so no sketching happened there.
In the evening we returned to our small cabin and relaxed - watching Dexter, giving ourselves pedicures, and doing intense core workouts {which we are trying to do often because of all the delicious food we are eating}
Our last day in Rome we planned to go to the Vatican City and visit St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, but we clearly were not prepared because we wore shorts {not short shorts} and were denied entrance ... bummer. We almost bought wraps to cover up and go inside, but we couldn't afford to. We were both dissapointed that we didn't think ahead when we dressed for the day but we had no choice but to move on and catch our train to the port city of Ancona.
Ancona was our last stop in Italy and was probably the sketchiest of all the cities we have visited. We arrived with nowhere to stay for the night and quickly decided to go into the first hostel/ hotel we could find because we didn't feel good about wandering around at night. Luckily, we found a really cheap hotel and were able to rest and shower. The next morning we made our way to the port to book our ferry to Greece! We were both crazy excited to get to the beaches .... unfortunately getting there would take 21+ hours! On June 28th we were on our way across the big water to the Island of Corfu to begin our "vacation from our vacation".

{PART ONE}

Hello {everyone}

i am currently in transit from austria to italy and thought i would try to complete a blog post about

my journey thus far. Let me preface this by saying that there will be typos in the following post - it is inevitable because i am using a tablet computer and i am too lazy to correct every error {sorry}
Jen and I are learning a lot about being nomadic travelers and will probably be experts come august... or at least i am hoping we get better at it. Some of our traveling woes have been cured now that we have eurail passes, that allow us to travel between and in 30 different countries in europe on one ticket. we are also learning a lot about couchsurfing and finding it easier and easier to find places to stay {which wasn't the case in the beginning}

{INTRODUCTION}

i thought i would have time to write before now, but it is difficult to get internet access in many places without paying a lot! When we do get free wifi we have massive to-do lists that need to be completed: email/ check in with family, send out couchsurfing requests, book bus, plane, or train tickets, etc. It's a hard life being on an unplanned vacation. And so, i apopogize for the length of this post.

So far, we have had some interesting experiences,seen some beautiful places, and met some really awesome people. I am going to {try to} briefly summarize a little bit about the trip so far {but 3 weeks and 5 countries is difficult to summarize} so bare with me... i don't plan on taking as long before my next post.
the journey began on saturday may twenty-eighth with an overnight bus trip to chicago {i almost didn't make it on the bus} and then after a few delays we were off to london to begin our journey.

{PART ONE - ENGLAND & SCOTLAND}

first stop - london - when we arrived in london we had a lovely {free: thanks to jens' uncle} hotel room just to the north of central london in the small suburb of eastcote. the hotel had a 600 year history and delicious {free} english breakfast {i have lots of pictures not sure if i can get them on here now}. We spent about three days in london exploring the city: we went to see a famous play called The Woman in Black, climbed hundreds of steps at St. Pauls Cathedral, saw a lot of buildings, went to the tate modern, etc. The city was busy with many construction projects which are likely being completed in preparation for the 2012 Olympic games which made the already busy city seem just a little too hectic for me.

After three days in london we took a bus to the city of bristol, where we experienced our first official couchsurfing experiece. we stayed with a 43 year old musician who took us on a walking tour {with a history lesson} of the city and showed us some great indian food before he had to work. {did you know that bristol is the home of trip-hop such as portishead} In the evening jen and i went to visit the bristol cathedral and sat on the lawn and had a drink while watching groups of people dancing, tumbling, and other crazy things. later on, afte visiting a small pub, our host coaxed us into singing a song he wrote {it was in spanish}..we attempted to sing it and it only took us 30 minutes to learn our parts. that was a funny night.

we really enjoyed our short visit to bristol and our host but the next day we set off for york to meet up with a small group of interior design students from k-state and went to dinner with some of them. in york we walked around and saw some really cool places: clifford tower, the fairfax house, st. mary's cathedral {with an awesome art installation by susie macmurry}, yorkminster abby {the largest gothic cathedral in england}, and some really great markets. We also ate the best strawberries EVER {i may go back someday just because of the strawberries}

after two great days in york we were ready to say goodbye to england and move on to scotland! We arrived in edinurgh late and stayed in our first hostel of the trip. We stayed in edinburgh for four nights - three of which we stayed with a couchsurfing host who left us keys to his house because he was going out of town. We got to visit with him and two of his roommates {both females} So far edinburgh has been one of my favorite places, with mountains surrounding the city and a castle in the middle it is such a beautiful place. During our visit we walked the royal mile to the castle, saw a weaving factory {where they make kilts}, went into the giles cathedral, and went to the national scottish museum {which has a well designed interior}. On the third day we hiked to the top of a gorgeous mountain at holyrood park called arthurs seat. This was probably my favorite experience so far… I could have stayed there all day. we also walked to the top of colton hill which is home to several monuments {one of which is in honor of architect robert burns}.

During our travels we are attempting to try foods that are specialties in each place {great fish and chips in england} and in scotland we had haggis {if you don't know what it is you should look it up} and tried a scottish single malt whiskey.

{PART TWO - EUROPE - AMSTERDAM & BERLIN}

from edinburgh we booked a flight to amsterdam on the 8th of june. In amsterdam we didn't have much luck with couchsurfing so we decided to pay for a hostel and continue to look for the following days. we headed to our hostel to check in and along the way we realized that it was located in the red light district {oops}. It was on the edge so we quickly found our way around. We met several cool people from the US at the hostel and spent an evening hanging out with them - eating, drinking, and listening to street performers {one of my favorite things to do this trip}. After a long evening and a flaky couchsurfer, we didn't have a place to stay and had to get a hotel room last minute - boo. The next day we did the one thing no traveler should do - we saw a movie {our excuse-it was really rainy}. that night we had better luck with couchsurfing and stayed with a nice host. Our last day in amsterdam we visited the tropenmuseum {the museum of anthropology} which was fascinating and walked through oosterpark {lots of birds} before leaving that night fot germany.

Our first stop in germany was berlin. We stayed for three nights with our lovely host Hella, who invited us to have bbq with her and her visiting family. We had a great time visiting with her during our stay. She showed us some of her favorite places and walked with us along the south gallery of the Berlin wall recapping the way things were before the wall was torn down {crazy to imagine}. I felt like everywhere we went there were signs and remnants of past opression. We spent a day visiting the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Memorial/musuem, which put both Jen and myself in a somber mood. AND THEN… as we walked through the busy city streets back to the underground station {this is a true story} a bunny fell from the sky and *thud* landed on the sidewalk not even ten feet in front us! We were basically shocked and didn't know what to say for a few minutes {we assumed that a big bird had dropped it} and needless to say we had a sad-ish day in Berlin.
Some of our time was spent wandering around landmarks in the city and having a "senior pic day", and eating yummy sushi, ice cream, and pizza {not at the same time}. On our last evening Hella took us to her favorite quiet spot near the river where we enjoyed a glass of wine and conversation with our lovely hostess.

{PART THREE - THE BREAK UP - MUNICH & VIENNA}

On Wedneday June 16th Jennifer Burke and I split up... it was sad. We went to the bus stop in berlin and said our farewells before boarding our respective busses - I was to go to munich to see an old friend and Jen was headed to denver for the weekend to be in a wedding. We both cried {just kidding}

I arrived in munich wednesday evening and was happy to see a familier face upon my arrival. I was visiting a friend who had been an exchange student during my junior year of high school - it had been seven years since we last saw each other. I stayed with Deedo and his flatmate Alex for three nights. During my time there I was given a mini tour of the city and enjoyed the company of some really great people - it felt good to laugh and be silly.
After seeing berlin, munich seemed lively and inviting. One of my favorite places there was the englischer garten - sitting near the water with hundreds of people doing the same thing - some swimming in the cold water {which i stood in..brrr}, others eating/drinking, and some just napping in the sun. I am happy in places like this - where everyone is enjoying the natural surroundings. Deedo also showed me around his university, markets, and climbed to the top of St. Peters cathedral {where i met someone studying architecture in zurich - i always meet people in funny places} for lunch we went to the hofbräuhaus {a touristy but nice beer garden/ restaurant}. There i tried several bavarian dishes and had an ice cold beer.
I really enjoyed my time in munich and was sad to leave after only a few days - but still i was determined to see austria and so i departed early saturday morning to travel to vienna.

In wien {vienna} i was greeted at the train station by julia my couchsurfing host for the weekend. I immediately recognized her enthusiasm and energy! She was awesome. We talked a lot as we walked the streets of Vienna going to a few places she admired. She took me to a great falaffel restaurant and then to a market to buy some fresh fruit for smoothies! Yum. Later that evening we went out to dance and we had an entire dance floor to ourselves... unfortunately Julia's wallet and camera were stolen from her purse that night. {sad}

The next day I was alone while Julia worked and I explored the city a bit. I went to the Schönbrunn Palace where i sketched and wandered aimlessly through the private gardens.{i was attacked by a giatnt moth there as well} There i also discovered a special exhibit about Marcel Breurer {Bauhaus - architect}. In the evening Julia and i explored.a Jean Nouvel building thst caught our eye and were sad we couldn't go everywhere in it because we were underdressed. We finished the night by playing games with friends of Julia {i am bad at austrian cranium} and eating yummy dessert!

On monday morning {20th} i left vienna to travel to salzburg, where i was to meet jen later that day. The train ride was wonderful with many beautiful landscapes to keep me occupied. I arrived around noon and checked into my hostel and changed quicky so i could see some sites while i waited for jen's train to arrive. I went to mirabell palace which was a backdrop in the 'do re mi' song in the sound of music {which was filmed in salzburg… there were a lot of references to the film and the real maria all over the city}. I was oddly excited to be at the site where one of my favorite films was made.

{REUNITED - and it feels so good}

After a short visit, i left the palace to meet jen at the train station and then we returned to the hostel to get cleand up. After freshening up, jen and i set off for a short walk / hike to the salzburg fortress that overlooks the city. We spent a while exploring the almost 900 year old structure and taking in the breathtaking views of the green mountain valley that housed the charming city of salzburg. {this city has become my new number-one this trip} … as the evening drew closer we explored some key sites including the birthplace of mozart {they have specialty chocolates called mozart. yum} … we were only in salzburg for one day so we tried to pack a lot into one day. At night we went to an irish pub to listen to live music and were back to sleep by midnight... we had a train to cath the next morning - destination: italy!

time goes by

it's funny the way time goes by so quickly...

i am in disbelief that may is already coming to an end and i will be leaving in 3 days {yikes} for my 'eurocation'...
part of me wishes i could stay and enjoy a lazy summer in manhattan {as i've done the last 5 summers} and spend time with the friends that will not be living in the same town when i return {and even the ones who will be}
...but the other part of me is excited that a lifelong dream is being realized. i don't know if i will ever be able to travel for two months in the future {or even two weeks for that matter} and so i am going to try to absorb every experience to the fullest.

for those of you who read this, please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

bye bye for now! {my next post will be from london}

earthships {raw beauty}

Most of people think that houses made of earth are dirty and they have to sacrifice a lot of comfort by living in one but as you can see from the pictures, that’s just not true.
....someday i want to build an earthship.
